Open Question: Chinese friend has dark patches on her skin, picture attached?

My friend from China has noticed these dark patches on her skin whenever she returns to the humid climate of her home city of Guangzhou, located in the southeast. She goes to school in the north, and while she's there the patches go away completely. They don't itch or hurt, but look a little strange as you can see in the picture of her stomach linked below.
